Who doesn’t love a delicious, hearty breakfast on a dreary day? My breakfast at the Avon Country Deli did not disappoint. I had one of the specials: a large, fluffy fig and brie omelet, home fries and sourdough toast.
What was disappointing, however, was trying to find a handicap entrance to the building. The deli is set in the back of Riverdale Farms. It’s located under Talcott Mountain with a picturesque view – but to get to the main entrance, you essentially have to climb a mountain.

Ok, no mountain. Really, it’s a whole bunch of formidable stone steps, with no railing… so, same thing! On this particular day, there was an orange cone on one of the steps. I’m assuming that was to let us know there was ice on that step or maybe it was loose. Luckily my friend noticed a walkway at the top to the right of the building. We drove around to the head of that walkway and parked. It would’ve been nice if there had been one or two handicap parking spots located there, along with a sign to the deli, but no such luck.
Nevertheless, to the walkway we headed – it was actually a red brick path, that led to the entrance. Maybe it should be painted to become a yellow brick road to stand out and lead our way. Or perhaps blue to indicate a handicap entrance. While I believe it’s level enough for a wheelchair, the edges do taper off, probably to provide runoff for the rain. This makes it difficult to walk side by side if someone needs help and I’m not sure what issues a wheelchair might have.
We finally made it in, and once inside, the restaurant is quaint and cozy. Our waitress was delightful and the food delicious, with large portions for the price. I also give them high marks for having a good handicap bathroom. The waitress did point to There’s a door at the back that also could be used as a handicap entrance. We also observed parking right there in the back, and the door has one step up to come in. Good for those with small disabilities, not good for wheelchair access.

But the parking behind the store looks like it’s for employees. It seems to be shared by several buildings and there are no handicap spots there. And who even knows who’s allowed to park here?

In the end, my friend and I enjoyed a lovely breakfast. We needed some sustenance after working so hard to figure out how to get into the restaurant. I did ask the waitress about it all – bottom line is Riverdale Farms oversees all that. I guess I’ll be sending them an email with my observations and suggestions.
