Feature Friday, Step Out

Feature Friday! Theresa Bailey, Professional Organizer

Theresa was one of my daughter Alice’s best friends. She was our neighbor across the street. A busy mom herself with three boys, her youngest a teenager, she always made time for my daughter. Alice would run across the street to visit with Theresa or play with her dog Max, or they would take Max for a walk, often going to the baseball fields. Those moments gave me, as a single mother, much appreciated moments of peace and quiet. I was sad when Theresa moved, but excited for her next adventure. Read below about her new exciting endeavor – Improved Spaces. I love her tip about “function first, then pretty”. Organize first then buy the fun organizing items. I always make the mistake of buying many organizational baskets and shelves, thinking they will miraculously organize my life! – Lisa

By Theresa Bailey

I’m Theresa Bailey and I have a passion for helping people and have always enjoyed organizing.  I’m a mom to three remarkable grown boys, wife to a wonderful and supportive man and dog mom to a 12 year old golden  retriever named Max and a 7 year old pit bull named China.

As a mom who raised three boys and worked full time while going to school, I know firsthand the true meaning of chaos, being overwhelmed, and busy schedules!

I truly believe that an organized home results in a less stressful life.  I started my business so I could share what I’ve learned by helping other people who simply don’t have the time, energy, or know-how to declutter and organize their homes. Thus, enabling them to live a more simplified lifestyle, and focus on what’s really important: life’s pleasures and stronger relationships.   Through a lot of trial and error – and several moves over the years, I have established simple routines and systems that contribute to reducing household stress.

In addition to decluttering and organizing my own home, I have been helping family and friends tidy their spaces for years.  I started training on how to become a Professional Organizer in 2020 as a hobby to keep busy during the pandemic.  I then decided to start my own business and took this time to build the foundation for my business.  Improved Spaces is an organizing company specializing in decluttering, organizing and simplifying.  I help busy and overwhelmed individuals and families reduce chaos and stress by helping them prioritize their belongings and create systems for long term organization of their home.  I support my clients with their decluttering, downsizing, and organizing projects to create order and peace in their homes.

I do in-person organizing in the Bangor, ME and Hartford, CT areas.  I also specialize in Virtual Organizing and thanks to technology, can work with clients anywhere.

 ALWAYS REMEMBER

Start where you are –

Don’t beat yourself up over not starting sooner. You are where you are, so get going now. That way, next week, next month, next year, twenty years from now, you won’t be wishing you started sooner. You can do it!

 Use what you have –

You do not need to purchase anything to declutter your home. However, you will need an open mind, a commitment to put in the time and the willingness to say goodbye to items you no longer use or love. Once you have decluttered your home, you might decide to buy some organizing containers or baskets, but leave that until later. Function first, then pretty. I’ll bet once you have finished decluttering, you might even find you already have everything you need to organize your items. No need to worry about being Pinterest perfect during the decluttering process!

 Give yourself grace –

Do not get stuck on the Perfectionism merry go round. We often hold ourselves to a much higher standard than we do others. Most times, these standards are unrealistic and prevent us from moving forward. Expecting your house to always be perfectly organized and clean is not realistic. Perfectionism prevents you from moving forward and limits your progress. The reality is, we are all human and we can either beat ourselves up over not being perfect, or we can decide to give ourselves grace and be happy with ‘good enough’. Self-grace is a journey. Take it from someone who is also learning to show herself grace, it is worth the effort.
