Cope, Disabilities

We Need A Little Christmas… Now!!

It is November of 2020 and the pandemic is here. It feels as if Covid19 is lurking around every corner. Our Covid numbers are going up here in Connecticut. What does one do to feel normal, especially with it getting dark by 5 pm? Start celebrating the holidays early! For me that is Christmas. I don’t usually put up decorations this early, sometimes I don’t put anything up but the tree! But I’m working from home all day, every day, so why not look at something fun and cheerful! Or listen, Channel 100.5 FM is playing Christmas songs 24/7. Also, Hallmark has Christmas movies on ALL DAY LONG! And surprisingly, I haven’t seen them all so there have been some new surprises. Hallmark movies provide a nice easy escape with a happy ending. But there is almost always some thread of loss or struggle woven in with the Christmas theme and decorations.

I was relaxing, watching a new 2020 Hallmark movie, “The Christmas Bow” and the mother in the story had a disability. I was surprised to see that and then I wondered if the actor really had a disability or not. Sometimes they hire actors to play out the disability. In this case, the actress really has the disability and it is CMT! My disability. It is rare to find people that have heard of CMT, let alone have someone in a show portraying a person living with it. It was great to see it normalized, being incorporated into the character’s everyday life. CMT was not the loss or struggle, there was a whole other story line for that. It showed her doing physical therapy, using a wheel chair and then switching to a rolling walker, and it was all just a part of their life. I hope we see more of that, people with different abilities in our movies and programs and it being just a part of life.

More about my journey with CMT in the next blog post!
