Encouragement, Step Out

Hairspray….Welcome to the 60's

65 years ago, yes ONLY 65 years ago, many schools and institutions in the United States were segregated. I have siblings older than that. When you sit down and really think about it, the 1950s and 1960s weren’t that long ago. Simsbury High School is stepping into the 60s with the musical “Hairspray”. Yes, Simsbury High is performing “Hairspray”. I have not seen any local high school perform this musical. Doesn’t mean it hasn’t been done, but I think it is rarely performed at the High School level. It requires a lot of singing and dancing and has a very diverse cast. I admire Dr. Younse and the Simsbury theater department for taking on this challenge.

“Hairspray” is one of my favorite musicals. It is fun and funny. The music is upbeat and memorable and there is so much dancing. The joy and energy are contagious. The show addresses issues of racism and bullying head on, but all through the eyes of a plucky bright-eyed optimist and lots of singing and dancing. It embraces diversity and acceptance on so many levels.

This next week I am going to check out how rehearsals are going, and I will share some pictures and updates. It is an exciting adventure for these kids and I am ecstatic that my daughter is a part of it. I get to witness the creative process in action.

Come check out the show. It opens this Friday, January 31st and runs for two weekends. To buy tickets go to Simsbury.tix.com.
