After the home study, I completed the dossier. This was a package of notarized documents that I mailed to the Secretary of State for approval and then it would go to the Guatemalan Consulate, before going to Guatemala. This process took me forever. I still remember the day my friend Lee came over to my place and helped me make a list and cross off the items I accomplished, and make a plan for items still open. There were over 18 items to complete. The list included a background check, health check and fingerprints. Most documents had to be notarized. Lee took digital pictures of my house which were included in the dossier as well. It was a great help to have all the pictures on one sheet.
The dossier required 4 additional references. One from my manager at work, Christy and then 3 others and they could not be from my close family or friends. It was very difficult to select the right people. Steve actually volunteered. He and his wife were friends from theater. Next, I asked Paula from church and Jeff, from work. They were very kind in their recommendations and also had to sign and notarize their copies. I greatly appreciated the effort it took to complete my request.
So many people had to vouch that I would make a good mother. 7 referrals in all.
Below are some of the pictures of my place for the dossier. Dad was great and agreed to be in a few photos with me. I’m sure he was still wondering what the heck was I doing, becoming a single mother, but he never said anything and was always there for me.
Next up – the referral and first pictures of my baby!
