Oh how I miss the creative process! I used to perform in local theater, mostly in the ensemble, but I did have the honor of performing in a small role or two as well. It was so fun! I sang at church, did some minimal drawing and sketching, and dabbled in doodling and poetry writing. Much of that has gone by the way side with the busyness of life as a single mom and my disability. My hands shake so sketching and even doodling aren’t quite the same. I do improvise once and a while and come up with some curvy, fun squiggly designs. I still sing at church now and then, but even that takes more effort than it used to – all that standing and sitting, standing and sitting.
Last weekend I helped, just a little bit, with the set painting for the show my daughter is in – “How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying”. It is being performed by Simsbury Summer Theater (SST) and my friend Leslie Mills is the set painter. She handles all of the amazing details including picking out the color palette and making the set look so professional. Alice and I were able to assist with the process by painting the larger objects; the background wall for the elevator and the chair rail to an office scene. It was fun and therapeutic…. and hard work! But most of all, it was awesome to be part of the creative process.
I need to find the ability, time and opportunity to feel and be creative again! This blog is definitely one outlet. I may try photography (with a stabilizing camera) or more theater volunteer work. Plus singing at church more often.
If you are in the Simsbury area and want to check out the wall we painted or that blue chair rail, come see SST’s performance of “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying”. Show runs August 1st, 2nd and 3rd at 7 pm, and August 4th at 2 pm, at the Werner Centennial Theater on the campus of the Westminster school.
