I have started doing a training program regularly twice a week. This program is for strength and flexibility. When I am in the gym, doing my workout and pushing myself to do that plank for another 30 seconds, or do an additional 5 crunches, I feel awesome. My trainer chants “ You Got This”, and I DO. I am superwoman. I do the squats, lift the weights and then get some cardio in on the bike. It is great! I also make sure I push myself just a little harder than last time; do that extra bit more.
Then, I step out into the real world and that strength is there, but it is hard to see when presented with the world’s daily obstacle course. High curbs, low seats, icy walk ways, numerous stairs, long hallways…. the obstacles are never ending. It is exhausting. I’ve started taking more naps!
I both laugh and admire the folks that have the need to participate in manufactured obstacle courses on the weekend for recreation. Just look at all of the new running events out there – Rugged Maniac, Warrior Dash, Mudderella (yes, there is an event called Mudderella), Spartan race and more! I am in awe, more power to them. I realize this is their way of pushing themselves to do more.
The world is my obstacle course. I work hard to take the confidence I feel in the gym out into the world, but it is still a challenge. Even as I get stronger with each work out, I must balance not pushing myself too hard as to tire my muscles. If I push too hard, I can be prone to tripping or falling. Welcome to the Everyday World Obstacle course.
Maybe you have obstacles of your own to overcome – a car difficult to climb into, a jar too tight to open. And don’t get me started on the adult proof caps on medicine these days! Be a warrior in the Everyday World Obstacle course. Stay strong and ask for help when needed. You Got This!!!
