Step Out

Abilities Outside The Box

Ability: Possession of the means or skill to do something.

I created the Finding Abilities Facebook page as a support group for people searching to find their inner strength to develop new skills. As my disability progresses I have discovered that I need to improve and practice my skill for self-advocacy and planning. The Finding Abilities blog and corresponding Facebook page provides me the opportunity to share ideas, think outside the box, celebrate success stories and, when encountered, discuss the obstacles I face while building those skills. It is a place to be heard and hear from others.

One way I have grown this past year is to step out of my comfort zone and attend more events and do more networking. This is not always easy, especially at the end of the day when I am so tired I want to curl up and take a nap! Finding the ability to get that second wind, move out of the “nap zone” as I like to call it and become involved takes a little push and leap of faith. One organization I encountered on my adventures out of the “nap zone” is Guiding Light Orphans (GLO). Learning about this organization and the work they do in the Masindi district of Uganda has been worth getting off the couch! They are finding the ability to provide healthcare to an area where there was none. Guiding Light Orphans (GLO) is truly thinking outside the box. Well, really they are using the box, a shipping container, to make a dream become a reality for the Masindi district of Uganda.

Who knew a shipping container could become a medical clinic? I didn’t. A shipping container laid on a solid foundation can be used as a building. That building, with updates and partitions, can be converted into a medical clinic. And that clinic, with medical equipment and a staff can offer healthcare and hope to an entire community. What is truly amazing is that this model can be replicated used by other organizations. GLO has the clinic and the staff to make this happen. All that is needed now is the medical equipment.

– A Vaccine Refrigerator

– An Autoclave Machine for Sterilizing Equipment

– A Microscope

– Examination Tables

– Pediatric weighing scale

– Table top sterilizer

– Desktop computer for medical records

– Adult weighing scale

– And More!

Giving Tuesday is coming up on Tuesday, Nov 28th. Please consider donating to help fill the clinic with medical supplies and equipment. To learn more about GLO, view the “container become clinic” and donate, go to https://www.guidinglightorphans.org/.

I became involved with GLO after finding the ability to network and go by myself to event. Please read about My Giving Story.
