On Friday, I went out with my friend to celebrate her daughter’s 6th birthday – Happy Birthday, Kennedy! We went to Agave in Hartford, followed by a Wolfpack game. I hadn’t been out in downtown Hartford in ages, so I was a bit nervous driving into the city. Where would I park? How far did I have to walk? How would the lighting be for walking back to my car in the dark?
Fortunately, that all worked out fine. I found a parking lot close to Agave, with an open spot close to the road. Highly recommend Agave and their Sangria! We walked over to the XL Center no problem. All was well … until it came time to find our seats.
My friend had purchased a birthday package for her daughter’s celebration with awesome seats down front. Having been to the XL Center, I knew the stairs were hard for me. They’re steep and the railings have gaps every few steps. I also knew from experience that Security could bring me down to the main level via an elevator and I could just walk up the few steps to sit with my friends. Turns out, however, that the elevator was NOT an option. UGH!!!! It’s blocked off during Wolfpack hockey games. Who knew?!
I was very disappointed. My friends handled it well. They all came and sat up in the handicap section, which is comprised of regular folding chairs located on the main level. Luckily, the whole row was free.
As I watched the game and the crowd, I noticed a new, fun-looking section down on the floor with tables. People were eating and drinking around these tall tables, enjoying their location right there next to the rink. Then I realized that this cool area is not handicap-accessible. For the second time in an hour, disappointment hit.
On the way out, we passed a restaurant with roomy seating and a good view that was easily accessible. Note to self: Remember this option for next time!
I’ve learned that with a disability, it’s best to have a “guaranteed” plan. I was bummed that my initial plan didn’t work out, but relieved that my friends went with the flow. I was, however, very disappointed in the XL Center.
I also was a bit disappointed upon arriving at the office Monday morning – No Up escalator to start the week!!!
