Step Out

CMT Awareness Month Con't

Today I participated in a Walk4CMT event. I have known about my condition (CMT) for over 10 years now. I receive CMT magazines, Muscular Dystrophy magazines and I even have one friend who also has this disease. But, I haven’t really been involved with any support groups or CMT related activities. This was a first.

I will admit I was a bit apprehensive. I encouraged (more like forced) my 14 year old daughter to join me. The walk was in a beautiful park in Hamden, CT. It was a small, grass roots walk event that raised almost $7,000 for CMT Research! Lynn, the person who greeted everyone, was very warm and welcoming. The walk was small but had an official feel with a sign in table with a CMT banner. A majority of the folks walking had matching orange t-shirts.

They also had healthy snacks….. bananas, granola bars and water to help us keep our strength up. My daughter and I were ready to walk!

People of all different abilities participated. There were several folks in wheelchairs, folks with AFOs (brace supports), walking sticks, and regular sneakers. There were people obviously walking for themselves while others were walking for friends or family. We walked a beautiful, flat path for as long as we could and then turned around to head back to the start. It was fun!

Today, I walked for CMT Research and it felt good to get out, be walking and be involved.
